Four-Legged & Freaked-Out: How CBD May Help Your Pets

Curious about CBD for pets? We totally understand why! Since CBD is known to assist in our own pain management, stress levels, moods and more, we get why pet owners would want to provide the same relief for their (fur) babies.

After all, like us, pets have their own issues, ailments and quirky idiosyncrasies. And they too—like you—house an endocannabinoid system. And that system’s receptors—again, like yours—can interact with CBD to ultimately improve or stabilize functions from energy to appetite.

Studies have shown that CBD directly activates one of serotonin's receptors. And the activation of that receptor, named 5-HT1A, can have both anxiolytic (i.e. used to reduce anxiety) and analgesic (see: pain-relieving) effects.

So whether your dog suffers from separation anxiety, your cat can’t handle a thunderstorm, or they both experience aches, it sure sounds like CBD could work for them the same way it does for us.

If you're thinking about giving your pet CBD as a T-R-E-A-T, here are just a few things to keep in mind.

HEALTH
If your pet suffers from an ailment, and/or is already taking medication(s), confirm with your vet that neither would affect its ability to properly respond to CBD.

WEIGHT
Dosage recommendations are usually determined by a pet’s weight (i.e. milligrams per pound).

DOSAGE & POTENCY

Think of a product’s “dosage” as its recommended amount of CBD per serving. A product’s potency, on the other hand, is how concentrated (or "strong") the CBD is in relation to its capacity. (For example, 100mg of CBD in a 15ml bottle means that 6.6mg of CBD will be delivered per ml.)

That said, start low and slow, observe your pet’s reaction, and increase if needed. And if ever in doubt, confer with your vet.
