The CBD Six...with Krista Simmons

by Danielle Cheesman (@daniellesaid)

Welcome to The CBD SIXAn interview series that spotlights how women we admire incorporate CBD into their daily routine—to help with everything from parenthood to professional pursuits—and demystify its stigmas in the process.

As a culinary travel writer, video producer and the founder of Fork In The Road, a digital media company that creates visual content for tourism and epicurean industries, Simmons lives to showcase the most inspiring stories about food around the globe. A culinary school graduate, she spent a year post-college backpacking solo and working on farms, and you’ve now likely seen her (or her byline) on Top Chef, Tastemade or in Travel+Leisure. Here, we talk to Simmons about CBD—in six ways.

What was your first experience with CBD?

I actually used to bake gourmet edibles for friends when I was in college in Santa Cruz, but my first experience with isolated CBDs as a product was actually after attending a fitness conference. I used it in both lotion and tincture form and was blown away at how it helped with muscle recovery after an intense workout.

Take us through your daily routine!

    Morning Must-Haves?

I always start my day with a gratitude practice, sitting up in bed before I get moving, thinking of three things I'm grateful for. It reminds me of my blessings, and puts me in an abundance mindset before things get crazed. Then I make my version of a Bulletproof [coffee]. I make a pour-over in my Chemex, which is a meditative process in its own right. I add a tablespoon of coconut oil and some Bulletproof protein powder, and then head out for a morning workout or to go about my day. I really liked adding the Sträva CBD coffee into my routine. My little concoction always keeps me full through lunch, but this added a nice element of focus.

    Afternoon Pick-Me-Up?

Not gonna lie, I'm a sucker for sugar and snacking when my energy levels are low. Since I work from home, it's all too easy to sneak into the kitchen and poke around for treats, so these days I've been opting to take my little Shiba Inu, Bento, for a walk instead. Stepping away from the desk for a few minutes and getting some fresh air gets my brain back into the zone.

     Nighttime Necessities?

I wish I could afford to be a skincare junkie, but I'm really simple when it comes to that stuff, especially since I don't wear makeup daily. I usually cleanse with Fresh's Soy Cleanser, then apply my LilyAna Naturals' Retinol Cream Moisturizer and some sort of night oil to seal it in. I really loved the Kana Skincare Lit Hemp Face Oil because it didn't smell like hemp and kept me nice and hydrated. It's also nice for a little boost before the gym if I'm needing a little glow before a nighttime workout.

What are you like before and after your CBD dose?

I'm naturally a really high-energy person, and I love the calm that CBD lends when taking tinctures.

What is your favorite delivery method and why?

I'm currently suffering from a pretty serious bone bruise from boxing, and the Dr. Kerklaan's Natural CBD Pain Cream has been really helpful alongside my PT.

What myths, misconceptions or stigmas do you feel still surround CBD?

I feel like those stigmas are changing pretty quickly, all things considered. I actually gifted my parents CBD products for Christmas this past year. They're by no means hippies, and really enjoyed it. They're both finding it helpful for their various aches and ailments that come along with getting older.

You have to gift someone your favorite CBD product. What do you choose and why?

Gosh, that's a tough one! I think of CBD as any other medicine. There's no one blanket cure-all for every person. I'd think about my friend and their needs and go from there. But if I had to choose one, that Kana Face Oil was bomb. I can't believe how great it smelled and felt on my face! The branding was also on point and blended right in with the other products in my medicine cabinet.
