The CBD Six...with Felicia Alexander

by Danielle Cheesman (@daniellesaid)

Welcome to The CBD SIXAn interview series that spotlights how women we admire incorporate CBD into their daily routine—to help with everything from parenthood to professional pursuits—and demystify its stigmas in the process.

Meet Felicia Alexander! The BoxUnion co-founder spent her post-college years bringing her sales and marketing expertise to companies like Sony and Mattel. But as a lifelong lover of fitness, she recognized that factors like age and ability made boxing, one of her favorite workouts, inaccessible. Seeing a gap in the market, she set out to bring boxing mainstream by creating a mind-body workout that’s efficient, effective and fun, and opened BoxUnion in 2017. Here, we talk to Alexander about CBD—in six ways.

What was your first experience with CBD?

I’ve been curious about CBD for over a year. I’ve been gifted lotions and chocolates in the past and sampled them, but never incorporated anything into my life on a regular basis. I felt like I had so many questions and I wanted to make sure I knew more about the products I put on or in my body. I’m also the daughter of prominent Interventionist (Dr. Louise Stanger) and grew up with a fear of drugs as I saw the devastation and destruction caused by addiction. I knew nothing about CBD and clearly had a lot of misconceptions about it. Meeting [Fleur Marché co-founder] Ashley and learning more about it was the perfect entry into CBD. I appreciate the research, time, and attention they put in curating their product offering.

Take us through your daily routine!

    Morning Must-Haves?

Coffee, quiet time, and a workout. I like to wake up early while my husband and son are still asleep. After pouring my morning coffee, I sit down at my computer and dive straight into work. I filter my unread emails, add things to my to-do list (I use Asana and love it), and review my calendar for the day. It is relaxing for me to get a head start on the day and to be able to work in silence. I’m typically out the door by 8 a.m. and off to BoxUnion for a class. A morning workout is a must for me and sets the tone for my entire day. I’m happiest when I’m sweaty and exerting myself physically.

    Afternoon Pick-Me-Up?

I often find myself in the car driving across town from one BoxUnion location to the other. If I don’t have calls scheduled and can’t catch up with a friend or family member during my commute, I’m likely to listen to a podcast or a book on Audible. Some of my favorite podcasts include: Wild Ideas Worth Living, All the Wiser, Life Will be the Death of Me, How I Built This, Work Life with Adam Grant, and The Tim Ferriss Show.

     Nighttime Necessities?

I love to take walks with my husband (and son when he joins us) and catch up on our day. I’m trying to take more time at night to decompress and not spend the entire evening in front of my computer or looking at my phone. I do enjoy a good TV show and find mindless activities are a perfect way to come down from the day. I use this time to foam roll, use my Hypervolt [massager], and slather myself with Dr. Kerklaan’s Natural CBD Pain Cream. I carry a lot of stress in my neck and shoulders and as I get older find myself with other random aches and pains. Dr. Kerklaan’s Cream is amazing and helps alleviate my aches.

What are you like before and after your CBD dose?

By the end of the day, my neck and shoulders are extremely tense, so after using Dr. Kerklaan’s Cream, I feel more space open up in my body. My shoulders no longer feel like they are stuck to my ears and I can move my neck with greater ease.

What is your favorite delivery method and why?

I’ve been taking the Nude Drops tincture from Juna. I love how easy it is to incorporate that product into my life. Something about putting a dropper full of liquid under my tongue is easy and I imagine I’m feeling the calming effects rather quickly. I thought it might be gross, but there is hardly any taste to the oil.

What myths, misconceptions or stigmas do you feel still surround CBD?

I think there are a lot. [Like that] CBD is marijuana. [And that] CBD is unregulated so you don’t know what you are going to get nor do you truly know the benefits.

You have to gift someone your favorite CBD product. What do you choose and why?

Without hesitation, I’d gift Dr. Kerklaan’s Pain Cream. Most of my friends are now in their early-40s too and experiencing random aches and pains. I’ve felt relief since using the product and I want to share that with them, too.
